Wimbledon Day 2 - Upsets Abound, 8 Seeds OUT!

Laura Robson is now the only British women into the second round with an upset over 10th seed Maria Kirilenko. Robson came out firing, never really letting Kirilenko dictate points. She finished it out in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. 28th seed Tamira Paszek, a two-time quarterfinalist here for the past two years, continued her terrible form losing in straight sets to Romanian Alexandra Cadantu. Alison Riske advanced into the second round, though not the way she wanted, as 31st seed Romina Oprandi retired from a wrist injury down 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 1-3. 21st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova continued her streaky form, mustering one game against former Wimbledon semifinalist Tsvetana Pironkova, losing 0-6, 1-6. Karolina Pliskova  comfortably beat 13th seed Nadia Petrova, who has been in terrible form this year with a record of 9-11. With the first round finished on both the women's and men's sides, two British hopes are left, Robson and Andy Murray who won yesterday.

In a rematch of the Eastbourne final, 19th seed Gilles Simon lost again to Feliciano Lopez in straight sets, 2-6, 4-6, 6-7(11-13). Bernard Tomic certainly had her ups and downs in the match, sometimes even within points, but managed 21st seed Sam Querrey, 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-3), 3-6, 2-6, 6-3. 16th seed Phillip Kohlscreiber retired from fatigue against Ivan Dodig after letting a 2 sets to 0 lead slip, retiring 1-2 down in the fifth set.
