ATP+WTA Quarterfinal Recap of the Week

In my opinion, there have been few surprises this week in tournaments for me. Perhaps I was a bit surprised that Virginie Razzano upset both Svetlana Kuznetsova and Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Carlsbad, but Jelena Jankovic's loss to Urszula Radwanska was not quite as surprising as Jankovic was still adjusting to American hardcourts, whilst Radwanska was already playing her 5th match on hardcourts. In Washington D.C., Mona Barthel went down quietly to Andrea Petkovic. Not really a surprise considering Barthel's current streaky form and that Petkovic is a former top 10 player. One upset that surprised however was Sloane Stephens straight set loss to Olga Puchkova. Stephens' seems to be unable to perform elsewhere other than the slams, but I guess Puchkova's streaky form was on the good side this time. Monica Niculescu also upset Madison Keys, but I saw that one coming. Niculescu's experience and annoying forehand slice would really test the teen's patience. Also, Keys was upset by Vera Dushevina last week in Stanford, a player that had been struggling to find form. The tournament that really caught me by surprise was the ATP Citi Open. Marinko Matosevic, who has been really struggling this year, made the quarterfinals upsetting James Blake, Nikolay Davydenko, and Milos Raonic (who is also really struggling as of late). Defending champ Alexandr Dolgopolov was beaten in his first match by Somdev Devvarman. Also, Marcos Baghdatis ROUTED Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals. In Kitzbühel, five seeds were out before the semifinals. Phillip Kohlschreiber was quietly swept away by Leonardo Mayer. Daniel Brands continued good form to upset Carlos Berlocq in the first round. Robin Haase continued his win streak to reach the semifinals before falling to Marcel Granollers. Granollers will face Juan Monaco for the title.

Predictions will start tomorrow hopefully!
